Before our recent trip to Las Vegas, we had read a lot of good things at other websites about Drais restaurant in the lower level of the Barbary Coast hotel and casino on the Strip. Unfortunately, Drais fell short of our expectations.
The atmosphere at Drais is impressive to say the least. You'll find large, beautiful paintings hanging on walls that are painted deep red with black trim. Soft lighting and hundreds of candles strategically placed throughout the restaurant are used to set the romantic mood.
My first complaint about Drais is their very limited wine selection by the glass. It's not uncommon for a couple to prefer their own glass of wine with dinner. With an extensive wine selection by the bottle, it borderlines on inconsiderate to have so few choices available by the glass.
As an appetizer, we started with the baked escargot with garlic, butter and parsley. The dish was very salty and it had an "organic" taste that wasn't pleasant. For dinner, our waiter suggested the glazed Chilean Sea Bass with soy sauce, garlic, fresh ginger and yams. It was very rich and, like the escargot, very salty. My wife ordered the jumbo lump crab cake mixed with baby artichoke, sweet baby carrots served with lobster mashed potatoes and a lemon caper sauce. In her words, "I've had better."
The service was friendly, but a little on the slow side. The restaurant turns into a nightclub during after hours, but we didn't stay late enough to see the nightclub. In a nutshell, I think my wife said it best, I've had better.
